Current story arc (#100-105) discussion *SPOILERS* « Thread Started on Feb 23, 2008, 6:02am »
Well, how about we talk about the current arc? The #105 previews are up (check HERE for instance).
I've really liked this arc so far - though I suppose it could have been one issue shorter perhaps - and have little understanding of the many who complain about too little forward momentum. I think there's a lot of tension and character development in Bru's stories generally and I quite like his style.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to actually reading #105 in its entirety when it comes out, but I must say that the dialogues in the preview pages don't exactly blow me away. Yes, I'm a diehard Brubaker fan, but I have to say it all sounds a little cheesy to me. DD's internal monologues (which some dislike) are always written well, but the conversation between Mr Fear and Hood sounds very staged to me and I don't know what's up with Fear's "MUAH-HA-HA" laugh when Matt shows up. I think Bru has done a nice job of setting Fear up as a mean and scary villain, but this looks a little too much like Skeletor (remember He-Man?) to me.
Final question: How much do you really think will be resolved in this issue? I think Milla will be sent to Bellevue indefinitely, but that would mean some continuation of that storyline, and I think Bru really is trying to take Milla out of the picture (something I don't agree with, but definietely something a lot of fans have been screaming for). Lots to think about. Soon, we will know.

Gloria, of the Impatience patrol reporting to comment on the preview ma'am!
Indeed, one can't judge unless the whole issue is read. Anyway, mu comments:
I agree that the Mwah-Hah-hah is cheesy, but then I love a good villain properly Mwah-Hah-haing. Still, I understand that, with all that's been going on, it may sound a bit jarring... A good frantic laugh is the kind of thing that makes a villain endearing, but we can't possibly be endeared to Cranston.
Still, the Mwah-hah-hah underlines something interesting: the guy is absolutely nuts... yes, he's clever enough to plot a sophisticated plan to screw Matt's life, but... I agree with the Hood, he doesn't get the whole picture.
It was interesting to see, in these pages the Hood as a counterpoint to Fear: The Hood'sway of thinking is eminently practical and bussiness-like, and he can't just see why Cranston has started such a mess just for a petty revenge. If Cranston falls, I can see that the Hood won't miss much such a nut.
One thing I'm afraid of (judging from the preview, is that Matt would let his anger blind his thinking: I mean, Cranston is obviously taunting him, so having Matt angry is part of his plan... Matt, please, kick him as much as you please, but keep a cool head... what did your sensei told you about fighting angry? eh? eh?
Plus: with all the pending issues here, I suspect this will be a non-Foggy (read non-becky, non-Dakota and possibly non-Milla as well) issue... the pages remaining seem to little for the proper final showdown between Matt and Cranston.
One last thing... Brubaker hints that there's something about Fear that is not to be expected... So I'm ready to get a big surprise

Hey there Gloria!
Interesting points. Yeah, I don't think the Hood will have much interest in Fear unless he can actually use him for something, and with Cranston having too much of his own (petty) agenda right now... Well, he's pretty much a complete nutcase.
I also think this will be a Matt vs Mr Fear stand-down all the way. Whether it will be a physical fight as much as Mr Fear laying down the law remains to be seen. I'm very curious to see what the big surprise will be. If the surprise is that there is no cure for Milla's condition, I might be a little disappointed since lots of fans have thought of that one already. It's always more interesting when the writers hit you with something you never saw coming.
And wasn't Matt's answer when Foggy asked him about what his sensei said about fighting angry the following: "Not to get in my way." LOL
Yeah, I can't wait 'til next week. Whatever happens I trust that Bru knows what he's doing.

I haven't found a way to do that on Proboards. It's a free board, and with cheap comes little in the way of amenities. I don't even think you can do it if you have a paid board on Proboards. I'll look into it.

Okay, where are all the people on this board? Well, I'll keep posting. Here are three advance reviews of #105. The one by Dave Wallace has also been posted (by him) on MWOF, but the other two I found just surfing around. It looks like it's going to be one hell of a ride (pardon my French).
